London, June 18 – Iraqi security forces arrested an individual in the northern city of Kirkuk for facilitating the travel to and from Iran of insurgents belonging to the al-Mahdi army, the armed militia of Iraqi Shia cleric Moqtada al-Sadr.

Iraqi security forces conducted an early morning ground raid and arrested a suspected facilitator of terrorist networks between Iraq and Iran in southwest Kirkuk on June 16,” said the Multi-National Corps – Iraq (MNC-I) in a statement.

“With coalition advisers present to support them, Iraqi forces attacked the residence in southwest Kirkuk and held their primary target without incident.

“The main suspect detained is believed to be responsible for transporting Jaysh al-Mahdi insurgents to Iran for training and then returning them to Iraq.

“He is also suspected of facilitating recruits and paying for financial affairs. These activities contribute to terrorist networks that bring explosive devices from Iran to Iraq,” he said.
